Exciting things ahead for Canola
Posted in Applications at 11:30 am by Jonathan Greene
Via Handful of Nothing today, we learn that the Canola team has embarked on a complete rewrite to take advantage of Python (excellent!) and are working on a new user interface along with some very cool new features like integration with Carman. In fact, the UI looks as if it could be the main place to be on your tablet for the consumption of media as well as communication services.
Marcelo posted a quicktime overview as well as quite a few paper diagrams of the work the team is thinking about. I uploaded the video to Viddler to make it easier to share…

An interest bit of news from Sprint and Google…We already know that Sprint and Nokia are working on a device for the WiMax network and now a Google Powered mobile portal is in the mix as well.
: “Sprint Nextel said on Thursday it would develop with Google a new mobile Internet portal using WiMax wireless technology to offer Web search and social networking.
Sprint’s WiMax for high-speed wireless and its services for detecting location will be combined with Google tools including e-mail, chat and other applications.”

Mauku - Jaiku client for Maemo devices
Posted in Applications at 12:18 pm by Jonathan Greene
Mauku a Jaiku client for Maemo has just been released. I’ve just installed it and think it’s a great addition for any Jaiku / Internet Tablet user.
Right now the application is pretty simple. There’s no easy way to reply or click through on a thread, but it’s very nice to be able to see a richer version of the conversation with buddy icons… like the web site, but in what seems like a more efficient view.
Give it a shot and let me know what you think. If you want, please feel free to add me as a contact on Jaiku. I’m atmasphere.

Mozilla based browser for maemo
Posted in Applications, Software Updates, Internet at 2:56 pm by Jonathan Greene
Mozilla based browser for maemo is out and ready to download! Though it’s only available for IT 2007v4 on the N800…
I encountered an immediate error on Gmail - Internal Error. Application ‘Web’ Closed. seems to work better and load a bit more quickly… There’s a nice new RSS icon and preview feature for pages with feeds… always a handy thing! Aside from .wml support via a new plugin, there’s not much new on the extension front as we already received the gift of Flash 9 with the Firmware update.
I’ll probably stick with the Mozilla engine for a while and see how it goes. There’s a preference menu option which lets you switch the Web app between Opera and Mozilla which is nice - wonder whether there’s a contractual deal with Opera that keeps them in or perhaps the Mozilla code is not baked enough to be a full replacement just yet. This is on Garage currently… not on the more official Downloads site.

Engadget has some very interesting images…
I had been thinking the next unit would be a modified design with WiMax to support the Sprint partnership, but this looks like a redesign… much more like the MID Platform.
I guess the competition is heating up in the mobile tablet space. iPhone, Ubuntu and MID are all coming on … I know the iPhone is not really in the same class of device, but it’s impossible to keep it out of the comparison - especially for average consumer.

I’m not sure what the deal is but my framerate performace is pretty bad when viewing YouTube still. I’m connected on WiFi and it’s better, but not great. Do we think this is a CPU, Memory or Opera issue?
I was also able to view Viddler for the first time as it only supports Flash 9 but the same low refresh issues exist. Not to be a downer here, but why do we have the support when the experience is less than ideal?

A long awaited firmware is out today … Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition>
Offering Skype support and Flash 9 as well as general system improvements it’s a welcome update and something suggested for all N800 users. There’s no word on whether this works on the 770 running the hacker edition, though there may be device specific requirements for both skype and the latest Flash.
You’ll also be able to use larger SD cards up to 8GB including those with SDHC support! I”m looking forward to carrying 16GB of multimedia in my pocket!
I have yet to update mine, but am looking forward to getting the new OS running soon.
